Gettin' Around
Aug 20, 2007

If traveling is about learning to adapt, today was my most difficult test so far. A couple days ago I agreed to buy a car from another backpacker. Today I coughed up enough money to pay for it. For those who don't know, Kiwis drive on the wrong side of the road a la English/Japanese. The interior of the car is all lop-sided as well, the indicators and windshield levers are switched. I can't count how many times I tried to make a left turn signal, and suddenly the wiper blades are doing a dance in front of me. The annoying thing about having a car is that there's no place to park it in the city. Tonight is my last night at this hostel, so I'll probably book one in a less central location until I find something more permanent. Damn, I really need to start finding a job... but I guess with all I took care of this week, I'm off to a pretty good start.

Hostel FOOOOOOOD!

 volcano-beach
Me on a beach with a volcano in the background. I think it's Mt. Rangitoto... don't quote me on that... all the names are like waka-titi-kaka-puapua-roa-toa-something-something... so they all sound the same to me right now.

cannon
New Zealanders put cannons on hilltops around the harbour before WW2 to protect themselves from a possible Japanese invasion... obviously, they never had to use them.

boat
NZ's entry into the 1995 America's Cup, the super prestigeous international sailing competition. Funny how it's names after America, yet most Americans probably never heard of it.

Not anymore... That's my new 1992 Nissan Maxima... what a week.

Alex - Submitted on 2007/08/20 at 11:52pm - You’ve been busy, but, thats not really unexpected. Wish I was there. My first class, Calculus II starts in 8 minutes. I really don’t want to go. Rather go to NZ. Get a job, ya lazy bum!! Have fun, and don’t fall in a volcano!
