The Wacky World of Sport
Oct 7, 2007
I was at the pub yesterday afternoon, and much to my surprise, the Red Sox/Angels ALDS game was on the TV... It was the top of the 9th inning and both teams were tied 3/3. Woohoo!!! I get to watch a last inning showdown. Suddenly, the TV switched channels to some rugby game. Goddamnit. I looked up the score online when I got home, and much to my contentment, Ramirez hit a 3 run homer bottom of the 9th to win the game. Sox lead the series 2-0. Then I thought to myself, how are the Yankees doing in their series against the Indians? And again, much to my contentment, they were down 0 games to two... in a weird fashion too. Late in a last game, a swarm of gnats swarmed the field and especially distracted the Yankees pitcher. Cleveland was able to score some runs late in a game that seemingly belonged to NY. Biblical.
But I'm in New Zealand, and that stuff doesn't matter here. What matters here is rugby. And the All Blacks, the team favoured to win... DESTINED to win the rugby world cup, left a nation in disbelief this morning. They lost in the quarter finals match against the French team. That means nothing to you folks at home. But holy shit... This was our team, our game, our cup to win. In NZ... it's All Blacks all the time... and they lost. It's like America losing in basketball in the olympics, but worse, because America is good at so many other things so no one cares. :) And that wasn't the only shocking loss this morning, the Australian team, the Wallabies, lost to England. They too were a favorite, and people were anticipating an Australian/ New Zealand showdown for bragging rights down under... all wiped away in one day.
