What is Project C? In order to graduate from the School of Fine Arts at Uconn, one needs to complete something called the senior project and present it at the senior show. This work usually is a culmination of all your years at uconn and shows your concentrated pursuit in your studies. Usually it's some graphic arts, painting, or sculpture project. I was going to do a figure painting pieces with Katherine Myers who's an excellent figure painting teacher, but she did not have any senior project classes that year. So i pondered and pondered all winter as to what to do. Then i decided to make a movie. Huh? A movie? Well, my friend John had made a fun movie the previous semester for his video class called Saving Amy. It was silly with minimal plot and B movie type action, but it was really fun to work on, and i figured i could make a sequel with slightly more developed characters, more in depth plot, and more action. So I recruited a bunch of my friends from wushu class as well as John to help me with this project. We filmed the scenes in winter and spring of 2003. Editing wasn't completed until that summer. For the senior show, John and I presented the title sequence and trailer as a collaborate project.
The challenges of making the movie... All the editing programs i had to learn to use along the way, including adobe premiere and after effects. I edited the whole movie on my laptop, which was a pain in the ass because it kept on over heating on me and shutting off when i'd render some footage or in the middle of a long and intensive editing session. I screamed and cried my self to sleep many nights for this. Also, the audio we recorded was quite lousy, because i was using a cheap camera, and i obviously did not have any professional equipment of any sort ($0 budget student movie). So, after everything was edited, i bought a nice condenser mic and recorded everyone's dialogue. Recorded all the sound effects, and had to dub the whole thing over. So none of the original audio actually existed. This as you can imagine was a pain in the ass, but i got really proficient with audio editing on Cool Edit Pro. There were lots of other challenges like people not being dependable, figuring out all of the special effects, props, costumes, and such, or my sister going to japan after shooting her scene, so we couldn't get any other scenes with her, but overall, this was an awesome experience and i learned a lot along the way, and wouldn't trade it in for anything, and this sentence is a major run-on. The final challenge was making the music for the movie. Video editing was essentially done in a few weeks, but i wanted all original music, and it took a long time to compose the soundtrack.
Why's the movie called Project C? Before I even thought about making a movie, I had a folder that I was using for my senior project ideas. I had little sticky letters i used to label it which was labeled "Senior Project; Charles Le". Well, some of the sticky letters came off, and at a certain point, the letters that stood out the most were the Project C. I thought, well that's cool. Then when the movie business came about, i used Project C as a code name, but then just kept it because I liked the way it sounded.
Why doesn't the ending make any sense? It does, you probably weren't paying close attention to the movie... bitch. I also left it really open ended hoping to make a follow up to it some day, but school ended and people went on with their lives. So only I know the true fate of the characters. Hopefully I will start my ambitious plan of continuing it in an illustrated story form, but I must take care of some of my other projects first.
Some Fun Movie Quotes "Mr. Le, Jack, it looks like you are both in quite a predicament." "You are... how they say... in a bit of a... cucumber?" "Oh, and Jack..." "Oh sister, i wish you were here to watch me finish Jack..." "I smell him." "I get Jimmy" "No, this is family business" "Most men succumb to her beauty, however, you have succumb to her fists" "That is none of your concern right now, for you are about... to... die..."
